Did you ever take a fabulous picture of your loving wife only to discover afterward that your mother-in-law was in the background chewing on a chicken salad sandwich? You try cropping the scene but that creates distortions and other issues. If you could just wipe out the background and replace it with anything else. Well you can get rid of both the mother-in-law and the chicken salad sandwich but you need photo-editing software.
Today, we are going to share two of the best we have found after a long search of the software waterfront.
Our first recommendation is Movavi Photo Editor. In addition to the standard object and background removal features, Movavi offers stuff like instant retouching as well as filters and captions. These are nice little items to have.
1. How to Change Photo Background with Movavi Photo Editor
The Movavi software is quick to download easy to grasp and completely FREE. There is a version available for Android or iOS. Now simply download Movavi Photo Editor and you are on your way.
Once this is done, it is time to Launch Movavi Photo Editor. Begin by clicking the Browse for Images button and choose the image with Mama eating the chicken salad sandwich. You can upload or just drag the photo into the main area of the program
Next, open the tab marked Background Removal. Click the green Foreground Brush. Use this to mark the foreground areas that you want to save in the photo.
Now comes the fun. Mark the areas you want to remove with the red Background Brush. You will quickly see how the objects you marked now have a yellow outline around them. Once you are satisfied with the accuracy, just click Set New Background and say good-bye to mother-in-law.
Now it is time to get creative by choosing your favorite color for the new background. At this point your wife’s beautiful image is displayed on a transparent background so you can choose to leave them this way if you like. Otherwise choose from the many stock colors to fill in the background. When the result is to your liking, click Apply the everything will be as you want it to be.
We are almost done except for saving your work. So go to the lower right corner in the program window, choose the image format then click Save. It is that simple.
Like any new software, the first effort can be a bit slow but remember, you always have the original photo saved on your mobile phone or laptop. You can always go back for a redo if you are not totally satisfied or if you just want to practice safely and quietly deleting a family member.
2. How to Change Image Background With PicsArt
Instead of eliminating an unwanted background, suppose you come up with the idea of taking a photo of your best friend in a bathing suit wearing flip-flops standing in the middle of a ski run in Aspen during January. For some reason your friend is reluctant to make the trip to Colorado. No worries, you have PicsArt so far that can show your friends ll what they want.

PicsArt process is just slightly different than Movavi but still quite simple. Once you have finished downloading PicsArt software begin with Select a Background. Unlike Movavi, this feature allows much more choices. You do not have to choose from either transparency or solid colors, with PicsArt you can combine two different images into a real piece of creative art so far.
Once you have selected your favorite background, look toward the lower left of the screen to the button Add A Photo. Locate the photo from your file and click Select.
The photo you selected will appear in the middle of the frame. Now go to the top of the screen and click on the button marked with scissors. This sets the background in place. This is a bit counter-intuitive until you get use to setting the background after selecting the foreground but you get use to it after a while.
Next step is to locate the paintbrush toward the lower left portion of the screen. Click onto this button and use it to shade all of the area you want to cut out for the foreground. You will be able to see what you have painted by the slightly red shade left by your brush marks.
If the first time you try this and you go too far, no worries, there is an eraser allowing you to do all the fine-tuning of your photo masterpiece.
Once you are happy with your work, go to the lower right-hand corner of the window, look for the check mark icon and click SAVE.
The result will be the newly created foreground overlaid on the background you selected in Step 1.
Pick The Winner
In looking at these two options: Movavi Photo Editor compared with PicsArt there is a trade-off between simplicity and artistic flexibility. There is no question that the winner of the simplicity contest is Movavi that requires fewer steps to get rid of unwanted background distractions. So for headshots, and other situations where cropping does not provide a good solution, go with Movavi. This option is also great for photo enthusiasts who may be a bit intimated having to learn new software so far.
On the other side, where creativity is the goal, the award for flexibility is clearly PicsArts. Now if there was just a way to put my mother-in-law in a bathing suit and flip-flops on Aspen Mountain, that would be some really exciting breakthrough in technology. Until then we can only be patient.
